University exams continue in relative quiet

CAIRO: After several days of clashes between security and pro-Muslim Brotherhood students at universities across the country, the end of the semester exams period continues in relative quiet on Tuesday.

Cairo University witnessed a state of calm, under increased security during first term exams in all faculties. Administrative security continues to check the identity of students and inspect cars to prevent the entrance of any outsiders, after the Brotherhood called for protests at the Faculty of Sciences (Dar al-Uloum).

At Al-Azhar University, pro-Brotherhood female students organized a protest in front of the gates of on-campus housing to object to the arrest of number of students over the past few days.

The main branch of the men’s university held exams in a moment of calm, as security forces remained present and exams continued on schedule.

Police forces inspected cars before entering the campus and secured the entrance of faculties, especially the Faculty of Commerce and the administrative building.

But security forces fired three tear gas bombs near the College of Education at Al-Azhar University when pro-Brotherhood students attempted to sneak up on security forces. In response to tear gas, the students fired flares and fireworks at security forces.

At Ain Shams University, exams continued on schedule and no protests or clashes broke out; however, the main gates to the university witnessed intense security measures: administrative security checked students’ IDs and inspected cars with metal detectors before they entered campus.
