Water is a liquid made up of hydrogen and oxygen. When it is frozen we see it as snow and ice. When it is heated it evaporates (turns to gas). Water covers more than 70% of the earth's surface in seas, lakes, rivers, etc. Clouds are also made of water. Altogether, the water on the earth, in the oceans, lakes, rivers, clouds, polar ice, etc. is 1.5 billion tons, and occupies a total volume of 8.7 million cubic miles (36 billion m).
