Mother's Day

This coming Sunday is Mother's Day. For Language Arts this week you are to write a three paragraph composition about mothers. Perhaps you want to write about your mother, step-mother, grandmother, or a person you think would make an ideal mother. What is it that makes a mother special? Sometimes the role of mother is taken on by another person. You may wish to use that idea for your subject, or maybe you would like to discuss how a mother animal cares for her young.

Remember the structure of a written composition. The first paragraph introduces your entire theme and discusses your first main idea. Its concluding sentence smoothly takes your reader to the next paragraph. The second paragraph must have its own topic sentence which should be strongly related to the transition from the first paragraph. The details of this paragraph pertain to your second main idea. This paragraph should also have a transitional sentence to take your reader to your third paragraph. This paragraph must also contain a concluding sentence that summarizes your entire composition.
REMEMBER:
__ 1. 5-8 sentences for EACH paragraph, for a total of 15-24 sentences.
__ 2. Focus on the five elements of good writing, particulary DIRECTION (structure).
__ 3. A CLEARLY reworked rough draft.
__ 4. Signature of adult who proofread your composition for PRESENTATION.
__ 5. Good copy in ink.
__ 6. All THREE papers turned in with final on top.
Favorite Relative

A paragraph is a group of sentences telling about a single idea or topic. The beginning sentence, or topic sentence, should get the paragraph started. It should tell something important about the subject of the paragraph. It should also make you interested in what will be discussed in the paragraph.
Write one paragraph about a relative. It can be a description of a favorite or not so favorite relative. Be sure to follow each of the steps below. Check off each one as you complete it. Your grade will be based on the successful completion of each step, with special attention to step 1.
____1. The first sentence of the paragraph must be a topic sentence. This sentence must express the paragraph topic or the central thought.
____2. The paragraph must be your work and original.
____3. Each sentence in the paragraph must stick to the topic and relate to the topic sentence.
____4. Indent the first word of the paragraph.
____5. Begin and end each sentence correctly. Make sure each word is correctly spelled.
____6. Proof-read the paragraph, then recopy it on a whole sheet of binder paper. Make sure you have the signature of the person who proofread your work.
Grandparents' Day

Just as we set aside special days to honor mothers and fathers, we honor our grandparents also. Grandparents' Day is celebrated the first Sunday after Labor Day. In many cultures, the older members of a family or community are highly respected and honored for their age-proven wisdom. This week you are to write one paragraph about an older relative, perhaps one of your grandparents. It should be a description of a favorite relative. On the back of this sheet, write the name of the relative you will be describing and then list at least five personality (NOT physical) traits you wish to describe. You are to DESCRIBE this person NOT tell why he/she is your favorite relative.

A paragraph is a group of sentences telling about a single idea or topic. The beginning sentence, or topic sentence, should get the paragraph started. It should tell something important about the subject of the paragraph. It should also make you interested in what will be discussed in the paragraph. Be sure to follow each of the steps below. Check off each one as you complete it. Your grade will be based on the successful completion of each step.
REMEMBER:
___ 5-8 sentences, including a topic and concluding sentence
___ five elements of good writing; focus on DIRECTION
___ clearly reworked rough draft
___ final is neat and written in ink
___ signature of adult who helped you proofread your work for content and presentation
___ all three papers stapled together with final on top
Thank You Note

We have been blessed with many special gifts and talents. Perhaps it is the ability to sing or play a musical instrument. Perhaps it is athletic ability or the ability to be compassionate and kind. Think of the special gifts or talents that you possess. On the back of this paper make a list or create a web brainstorming these gifts. Next to each, give a reason why you are grateful for it.

Your assignment this week is to write a thank you note of at least one paragraph to someone (perhaps God) for giving you, encouraging you, or teaching you a particular talent. Express your appreciation and tell why you particularly enjoy this talent or gift. You should be focusing on PURPOSE and IDEAS this week.
REMEMBER:
  1. __ 5-8 sentences
  2. __ correct letter format: heading, greeting, body, closing, signature
  3. __ five areas of good writing: PURPOSE, direction, IDEAS, style, presentation
  4. __ signature of adult who helped you proofread your rough draft
  5. __ final copy neat, in ink, and headed properly
  6. __ all three papers stapled together with final on top

THE READING / TAPESCRIPT

Mother's Day is an important day all around the world, even though it started in North America and Europe. Not all countries celebrate it on the same day, but the most popular day is the second Sunday in May. It is, of course, a day to honour our mothers and make them feel extra special. A punctuation point about the day is that most countries choose the singular possessive “Mother’s Day”, with the apostrophe before the ‘s’ to show that each family honours their mother, rather than all of the world’s mothers. Young children get especially excited about Mother’s Day and put a lot of effort into making cards and presents for their Mums, or Moms in America. For mothers, it is like having a second birthday.
Mother’s Day in the USA, the UK, Canada, Australia, etc. means mothers usually get the day off from housework. It is common for children to cook for their mother so she can have breakfast in bed. She also receives presents, flowers and cards. In America, Mother's Day is the busiest day of the year for restaurants, as children take their Mums to lunch and/or dinner. Americans spend a lot on this day - over $2.5 billion on flowers and $70 million on Mother’s Day cards. In Sweden, people buy small plastic flowers and the money raised goes to help needy mothers and their children. Many people are against the idea of Mother’s Day as it is upsetting for children (and adults) who have lost their mother. Spare a thought for them this Mother’s Day.
