Beblawy on constitution, economy, stability and foreign interference
Prime Minister Hazem al-Beblawy -

CAIRO: Prime Minister Hazem al-Beblawy praised the efforts of the 50-member committee that amended the constitution, describing the effort as an important step toward ending the transitional period.

Beblawy said in a statement to Radio Misr, “There are some parties that don’t want this phase to end peacefully.” He called upon citizens to participate in the referendum on the new constitution, scheduled to be held in January. He added that the government took a number of procedures to secure the electoral committees and supervisors.

Regarding the economic situation, Beblawy said, “We have to provide the conditions and the circumstances to improve the economic situation through achieving social justice and restoring political stability.”

Furthermore, Beblawy said, social justice could be achieved by providing services like quality education particularly for the poor. He signaled that economic growth depends on each citizen, who should perform his role to enhance the production cycle.

About the government’s plans for the next phase, Beblawy said, “The government is going through several steps but not all of them are visible to the citizens,” saying visible ones include the minimum wage.

He added that the Egyptian economy has lost many of its resources, including tourism, investments and the stock market. He said as soon as stability returns to normal, the country would no longer need aid.

“The government carried out an urgent plan to enhance investments by 22 billion EGP and then was raised to 29 billion EGP, in order to run urgent projects to achieve development in the vital sectors for the citizens like transport, roads, electricity, agriculture, housing and others,” Beblawy said.

He further highlighted efforts by the government to focus on regions like Upper Egypt and the “Golden Triangle“ of Safaga, Halayeb and Shalateen.

In his statements, Beblawy also said the new protest law is regulating demonstrations and does not ban them, because protests are a right guaranteed everyone.

He also spoke about foreign interference in Egypt’s affairs, saying that although Egypt is an open society and must cooperate with the global world, “this doesn’t mean that all what they say is right and should be implemented.”

“In Egypt, there are about 38 industrial areas that the government is trying to raise to 46 areas, so that investments can raise from 60 billion EGP to 100 billion EGP and available job opportunities can reach 50,000,” he added.

“Regarding foreign investments, about 400 companies with 700 million EGP in capital were added,” he said.
