=What does the broken tree signify in the play?
More than three year ago, Larry Keller was reported missing while flying a US military plane in the war. The tree was planted as a memorial to Larry. Kate thought that the tree was planted too early because she wanted to believe that her son was still alive.
To Kate the tree represented her son. The tree's life and growth gave her hope that her son was still alive somewhere and would still be found and returned home. When that tree was blown down, Kate felt it was a bad omen and didn't feel at ease.
