The words we've been looking up this week aren't exactly homophones, although some are pretty close to it, which is why they're so easily confused. But these pairs are, so see if you can distinguish between these pairs of homophones:

1. aural/oral

Aural-----related to hearing
Oral-----spoken / not written
2. bail/bale
Bail-----a sum of money which a person who has been accused of a crime pays to a law court so that they can be released until their trial. The payment is a way of making certain that the person will return to court for trial

Bale-------a large amount of something such as hay , paper, wool or cloth that has been tied tightly together


3. gilt/guilt
Gilt---- covered with a thin layer of gold or a substance which is intended to look like it
a gilt picture frame
It's not solid gold - it's just gilt.
Guilt-------- a feeling of worry or unhappiness that you have because you have done something wrong, such as causing harm to another person
He suffered such feelings of guilt over leaving his children.
She remembered with a pang of guilt that she hadn't called her mother.

4. gored/gourd
Gored----- (of an animal) to cause an injury to someone, or damage something, with the horns or tusks
gored by a bull
gourd----- a large fruit which has a hard shell and cannot be eaten, or the shell of this fruit used as a container

5. wretch/retch
Wretch----- a person who experiences something unpleasant
a poor/miserable wretch
retch--- to react in a way as if you are vomiting
The sight of blood makes him retch.

6. hoard/horde
Hoard------- to collect large amounts of something and keep it in a safe, often secret, place
During the siege people began hoarding food and supplies.
There would be enough food on a daily basis if people were not hoarding it.
Horde------ a large group of people
Hordes of students on bikes made crossing the road difficult.

7. scull/skull
Scull-----

Skull---- the bones of the head, which surround the brain and give the head its shape
The soldiers discovered a pile of human skulls and bones.

8. broach/brooch
Broach------- to begin a discussion of something difficult
At some point we've got to discuss money but I don't know quite how to broach the subject with him.
Brooch------ a small piece of jewellery with a pin at the back that is fastened to a woman's clothes
She wore a small silver brooch.

9. seed/cede
Seed----- [ C or U ] a small round or oval object produced by a plant and from which, when it is planted, a new plant can grow
Sow the seeds (= put them in the ground) about 3 cm deep.
The chemical will stop all seeds from sprouting (= starting to grow) .
The farmers grow these crops for seed (= for planting to grow more crops, rather than for eating) .
Cede----- to give something such as ownership to someone else, especially unwillingly or because forced to do so
Hong Kong was ceded to Britain after the Opium War.
10. chased/chaste


Chased------- [ I or T ] to hurry after someone or something in order to catch them
The police car was going so fast, it must have been chasing someone.
She was chasing (after) a man who had snatched her bag.
2. [ I usually + adverb or preposition ] to hurry or run in various directions
She couldn't study with the children chasing around the house.

Chaste------ describes decoration or style that is very simple and smooth
I like the simple, chaste lines of their architecture.
