Summary of Chapters One Through Eight in the First Part of Gulliver's Travels
Chapter 1: Gulliver's life is described to the point where he sails on a ship called the Antelope. The ship sinks, and Gulliver seems to be the only one who survives by swimming safely to shore. When he wakens, he finds himself surrounding by people who are only six inches tall. Gulliver realizes he has been tied with innumerable tiny ropes and breaks free. They feed Gulliver, so he feels indebted to them, and decides not to fight them or hurt them. The tiny people haul him to a large temple and chain him to it so the cannont escape.
Chapter 2: The emperor, on horseback, visits Gulliver. They continue to feed Gulliver. There is concern that feeding Gulliver will cause a famine in the land. They make a bed for him out of six hundred beds and have tailors make clothes for him. Every day Gulliver asks the emperor to set him free, but the emperor cautions Gulliver to be patient.
Chapter 3: Gulliver earns the trust of the Lilliputians through his good behavior. The emperor shows Gulliver how government ministers are hired, which is by shows of jumping ability. Candidates for court positions also must show their dexterity with ribbons, leaping over or crawling under, as commanded by the emperor. Finally, Gulliver is freed and he makes promises to help the Lilliputians with such work as delivering urgent messages, helping them in times of war, mapping their land, and with construction.
Chapter 4: Gulliver goes to Mildendo, the capital city of Lilliput, where the Emperor's palace is. A messenger comes to the emperor saying that there are rebel forces, who disagree with the Emperor as to the proper height of shoe heels. Additionally, the country of Blefuscu is threatening to make war against Lilliput. Blefuscu and Lilliput are at odds because they disagree over which end of an egg should be *****ed, the small end or the big end.
Chapter 5: Gulliver serves Lilliput in its efforts against Blefuscu by acting as a spy and devising a large metal net to stop the Blefuscu ships. Gulliver then hauls all the ships back to Lilliput. The Emperor of Lilliput is thrilled with Gulliver. Blefuscu surrenders to Lilliput. When the Emperor's wife's living quarters catch on fire, Gulliver puts out the fire by urinating. Gulliver is pardoned of his crime of public urination.
Chapter 6: Gulliver describes the lives of the Lilliputians in greater detail. The children are raised by the kingdom and only get to see their parents twice a year. There are no poor as everyone is taken care of by the government.
Chapter 7: Gulliver is charged with treason. Rather than execute him, the Lilliputians have decided to put his eyes out and starve him to death. Fearing this punishment, Gulliver escapes to Blefuscu.
Chapter 8: Gulliver finds a capsized boat, which is made for men his size, in the waters near Blefuscu and asks for help fixing it. When the boat is ready, Gulliver sails safely back to England. He has brought many miniature animals in his pockets back to England. He sells the animals and makes a great deal of money.
