Dear colleagues,

I`d like to thank Mr.H0riz0n for this brilliant idea and thank all those who have participated.

Here`s a general list of "Silent Letters" in alphabetical order. I compiled this list from many sites and forums last year and I only put it in this final form last month. You won`t find all these words compiled together anywhere on the Web.

All these words are correct, if we pronounce them as explained here. But you`ll find differences between British and American English.

The most silent letter is "e" . Here`s also a poem explaining this.

من الكلمات الأخرى الشائعة التى يخطيء كثير منا فى نطقها كلمة special فمعظمنا يميل إلى نطق صوت /j/ الذى يشبه حرف الياء فى اللغة العربية فى المقطع الثانى وكأنها /speʃjə l / وهذا غير صحيح فالمقطع الأخير لا يوجد فيه اصوات متحركة سوى صوت الـ /ə/ والتى يمكن إهمالها ليتحول حرف الـ L إلى ما يعرف بـ Syllabic L
والنطق الصحيح للكلمةهو: /speʃəl/ أو /speʃl/

- house is pronounced with /s/ if it is a noun, with /z/ if it is a verb or in housing and houses.
- close is pronounced with /s/ if it is a adjective or adverb, with /z/ if it is a verb

أيضا من ضمن الأخطاء الشائعة فى النطق هو نطق مقطع tal الأخير الذى تنتهى به كثير من الكلمات كحروفه فيظهر حرف الـ a فى النطق كما فى كلمة cat وهذا غير صحيح فالأفضل تجاهل هذا الحرف ونطق حرف الـ L كأنه مقطع مستقل أو ما يعرف بـ syllabic L ومن أمثلة الكلمات التى يشيع فيها هذا النطق الخاطئ :

accidental - acquittal - brutal - capital - coastal - coital - congenital - continental - crystal - dental elemental - fatal - frontal - fundamental - genital hospital - immortal - marital - mortal - parental - postal - rental - total - vital

وأفضل طريقة لنطق مقطع tal هو ان ننطقه كأنه tel وليس tal

I guess in many cases we can even say the word /-tl/, not just /-tel/.

That's right Mr Essam.
"tel" here is letters not phonetic symbols. In order to pronounce /-tl/ correctly you have to add an intrusive vowel between /-t/ and /-l/ so the letter L has to be pronounced as a complete syllable (syllabic L) - the easiest way to get your students pronounce the /l/ is to ask them: What letter is this : L?
The Answer will be "el".
