The objectives of teaching English as foreign language in the Primary Cycle
The objectives of teaching English in the Primary Cycle are intended to familiarize the pupils with the language (orally and in writing) in a stress-free and fun-loaded atmosphere to prepare them for more demanding tasks in the subsequent stages.
Below is the general statement of the performance objectives of teaching English as a foreign language in grades one, two, three, four, five & six in the Primary Cycle in terms of language skills for convenience.
The aims in the early grades are
- To assure that learning English is easy while developing a child's enthusiasm for, and the desire to learn a new language
-To develop positive learning habit such as turn taking organizational skills, and cooperative learning
- To enlarge children's horizons so that they become familiar with different cultures while developing an understanding of their own from Arabic
- To experience language awareness in terms of how English works and differs
- To enable children to communicate simply but effectively through the development of oral proficiency in English
-To lay solid foundations for the development of literacy skills in English
The two readers in Hand in Hand Year Three will add to the pupils" vocabulary and develop the children's enthusiasm as well as develop their reading skills
Listening
- Distinguish between English and other languages.
- Identify and name all the sounds of English.
- Carry out simple oral instructors – class routine.
- Listen to and understand the time on the hours.
Speaking
- Produce consonant clusters as well as different sounds accurately.
- Use greetings and leave takings.
- Memorize and recite songs and rhymes.
- Give personal information "name, age …………"
Reading
- Identify sound – letter correspondences.
- Read the written forms of the numbers 1: 100.
- Read the names of self and class members.
- Sight – read vocabulary in context.
Writing
- Write the letters of the alphabet.
- Write the numbers 1: 100.
- Write your own name and the names of the things.
- Copy neatly from core vocabulary

1.To contribute to student’s intellectual, personal and professional growth.
2.To enable student to acquire basic language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing).
3.To develop student’s awareness of the importance of English as a means of international communication.
4.To develop student’s positive attitude towards learning English.
5.To enable student to acquire the necessary linguistic competence required in various life situations.
6.To enable student to acquire the linguistic competence required in different professions.
7.To develop student awareness about the cultural, economic, and social issues of his society and prepare him to participate in their solutions.
8.To develop the linguistic competence that enables student –in future- to present and explain Islamic concepts and issues
9.To enable student linguistically to present the culture and civilization of his nation.
10. To enable student linguistically to benefit from English-speaking nations, that would enhance the concepts of international cooperation that would develop understanding and respect of the cultural differences between nations.
11. To provide student with the linguistic basis that would enable him to participate in transforming other nations’ scientific and technological advances that can enhance the progress of his nation
