comment and discuss - david copper field from chapter one to chapter 5

David Copperfield.
Chapter 1
Comment on the following:
1- "You are only a baby yourself"
These words were said by Miss Betsey Trotwood to
Mrs. Copperfield (David's mother) when she went to visit them to see if she gave birth or not yet. She was upset when David's father married a young woman. She is very strange but a kind- hearted woman.
2- "The baby will be a little girl and I like little girls."
These words were said by Miss Betsey Trotwood to David's mother when she went to visit her to see if she gave birth or not yet. These words show how much Miss Trotwood liked girls and how much hated boys.
Later, she would get angry and leave the house and never show up again when she knew that the baby was a boy.
3- "You can have a holiday by the sea"
These words were said by David's mother to David.
She told him that he was going to travel with Peggotty to spend a holiday by the sea. How ever, she wasn't going to travel with him because she would get married to Mr. Murdstone she didn't tell him then. She would tell him after he's back home.
4- "When I am a lady, I'll have a lot of money."
These words were said by little Emily to David when they were talking by the sea. Emily was telling David about here dreams in the future. These words show ambitious was Emily and how much she loved Mr. Peggotty because he was a kind man who looked after her after her parent's death.
5- "Your new father is Mr. Murdstone."
These words were said by Peggotty to David when they came back home to find that his mother got married to Mr. Murdstone whom David didn’t like.
David found that his mother wasn’t waiting for him. He thought that his mother was dead. Peggoty tried to comfort him so she told him that he had a new father (his mother got married.)
David Copperfield.
Chapter 2
The Peggotty's represent loyalty and faithfulness in the novel. Discuss
Mrs. Peggotty loved David and his mother so much she was faithful to them and took David to stay with her brother at Yarmouth during its mother marriage. She opposed David's mother marry to Mr. Murdstone. She remained faithful to David even after the death of his mother.
Mr. Peggoty too loved David and welcomed him in his house. He lived in a poor house in a boat there were Ham, little Emily, and Mrs. Gummaie living with Mr. Peggoty he looked after all of them. He went to visit David at "Salem house'.
Prove that Mr. Murdstone was a cruel man.
Mr. Murdstone was a cruel man who turned David's life into constant pain and suffering. He always beat him while he was teaching him his lessons. He prevented his mother from showing any sign of love or emotions to David. He made her believe that he was a bad boy. Miss. Murdstone showed David that he wasn’t wanted in his own house, he made her sister take control in every thing in the house and deprived Mrs. Copperfield from all her rights to manage her house. He sent David to a bad school away from home. He treated him like a dog after the death of David's mother Mr. Murdstone didn’t send him back to school, he sent him to London to work.
David Copperfield
Chapter 3
Discuss the following:
1- David's mother has a weak personality.
Mrs. Copperfield was David's mother, a weak and naive woman. She had a very weak personality. She was wrong when she trusted Mr. Murdstone and accepted to marry him. Mr. Murdstone made her believe that David was a bad boy. Miss. Murdstone made use of her weak personality and took charge in the house and deprived her from all her rights as a house wife. Moreover, Mrs. Copperfield couldn’t prevent her husband from beating her son. She lived with her son as strangers in their own house. In addition she was taken care by Peggoty. Mr. Murdstone ordered her not to show any sign of love to David.
David Copperfield
Chapter 4
Comment on the following:
1- "I won't leave you my love, ill stay here until I am old and useless."
These words were said by Peggoty to David's mother, when David told Peggoty that barkis wanted to marry her. David's mother loved Peggoty greatly and she didn’t want Peggoty to leave her. But Peggoty comforted her and told her that she wouldn’t leave her until she is old and useless. These lines show how loyal and kind hearted Peggoty was to David and his mother. It also proves that Peggoty was the one who looked after David and his mother.
2- "I am afraid I have some bad news for you. Your mother is very ill."
These words were said by Mrs. Creakle to David at "Salem house". One day Mrs. Creakle sent for David to tell him that his mother was very ill. Actually, his mother wasn’t ill she was dead but she didn’t tell him. That was two months after David's holiday.
3- "You are being very rude. Everyday you stay in your room or sit with uneducated servants."
These words were said by Mr. Murdstone to David when David was on holiday. He felt stranger and lonely at his house. He was uncomfortable when he was with Mr. and miss. Murdstone that’s why he preferred to stay alone in his room reading stories, or sit in Peggotty's room. How ever, Mr. Murdstone didn’t like David acting this way. So he sent for David and told him these lines. "Uneducated servants" means Peggoty who greatly loved David and his mother. She was loyal and faithful to them.
David Copperfield
Chapter 5
1- What advice did Mr. Micawber dive David?
When Mr. Murdstone sent David to London to work and earn his living after his mother's death, he lived with Mr. Micawber. Mr. Micawber was a kind man but he was very poor. His wife often sold things to get money to pay every one that Mr. Micawber owed, but the money wasn't enough. Finally Mr. Micawber was in prison. Then his wife family helped the family with a large sum of money and they were able to leave the prison. Mr. Micawber wanted to teach David a lesson he told him that he shouldn’t spend all his money, he should sane even a pence. Also if he spent more that that he earned, he would be in dept and would go to prison and the result is unhappiness.
2- "I'll leave my job and go to my aunt, Betsey Trotwood." Comment
These words were said by David to himself when he decided to leave London because he didn’t have any friends he thought that he could go to his aunt Betsey Trotwood in Dover. He wrote to peggoty and asked her for money and his aunt address. Leaving London and escaping from work and traveling to Dover where his aunt lives is going to be a turning point in David's life. He'll lead a different life.
