Leila
Leila,the heroine بطلة القصةof the story, was both a research assistant باحثة مساعدةin Cairo University and an archaeologist
مفتشة /باحثة آثار. She took up archaeology following Dr Hafez ‘s footsteps, as he was a friend of her family.
Her degree/education
She got her degree at the Italian Institute of archaeology in Rome. She did not study in Cairo University because she did not want people to think that Dr Hafez was giving her special treatmentمعاملة خاصة. She got interested in archaeology because when she was young, she used to listen to Dr Hafez who spoke proudly about his excavations.أعمال التنقيب عن الآثار
Her experience
She worked with Dr Hafez before in the Valley of the Nobles in Luxor. They excavated the tomb of Sennofer together. The tomb of Sennofer had wonderful paintings of birds and animals on the walls.
Why did Dr Hafez choose her to be in charge of a team?
Dr Hafez chose her to be in charge of a team of three local archaeologists because he could trust herيثق بها. She understood him .She was quite experienced and could speak English very well.
Leila Discoveries in Peru
She found a gold figure of llama with a square head and a thick tail. She discovered a gold mask, which was like the face of the sun. The gold mask meant that the tomb was a royal one. She also discovered an Inca site on the road to Acomayo.
Her courage
She was brave enough to face Lander in the tomb and told him that he was a thief .She was brave enough to agree to go with Amalia to catch Martin Lander with no protectionحماية at all.She insisted on trying to catch Lander to carry out her promise to Amalia when she (Amalia)was seriously injured and could not take her revenge. Leila was able to arrest Martin Lander when she hit his plane with the truckالشاحنة الصغيرة.He knocked outفقد الوعي and was caught by the police later on .

She asked Dr Hafez to go with her to the village to thank the people there because they helped Amalia when she was injured in the car accident.
Samira
She was Leila’s sister . She was a reporter on one of the Cairo newspapers .She was ambitiousطموحة and was looking forward to writing articles on the treasures that her sister would discover in Peru. Unlike her sister ,Samira was funnyدمها خفيف و مضحكة and enthusiastic مليئة بالحماس.She never worried about anything .لا يساورها القلق بشان أي شيء
The differences between Leila and Samira
Leila worried about everything but Samira was funny and full of enthusiasm Leila complained to Dr Hafez about Amalia ‘s unfriendly feelingsمشاعر غير ودية towards her .Dr Hafez advised Leila to be on good terms with على علاقة طيبة معهاher as they were both good archaeologists and of the same age.
Dr Hafez
Dr Hafez was a well known archaeologist. He was the leader of the excavation project in Peru which was part of a UNISCO exchange programmes. He had a lot of experience in archaeology as he excavated the tomb of Sennofer in the valley of the Nobles in Luxor .He had faith and trust in others and he did not believe that Amalia was working with Lander. He chose Leila to be in charge of one of the teams.He was intelligent and was suspicious مرتاب of Pablo.He could not believe what Pablo had said about the gold mask .To test him ,he falsely told him that the police had caught Lander .The trick made Pablo confessيعترف the wrong he had done.
Amalia Guzman
She was a Peruvian archaeologist مفتشة آثار من بيروworking on the UNESCO exchange programme برنامج ثقافي أو علميin Peru with Dr Hafez. She knew a lot about the local tombs .She was unfriendly and jealous غيورة من of Leila because Dr Hafez chose Leila to be in charge of the team and to be his assistantمساعدة .
She was jealous because Leila discovered the gold mask, she became famous and would get all the creditتحظى بكل الثناءso she put a small gold rabbit in Leila‘s work clothes to get her into trouble. As a result the police arrested Leila and put her in jailفي السجن. Amalia couldn’t tolerateتتحمل finding Leila put in prison,she realized that she had done wrong .She went to the police station and explained everything ,and asked Leila to forgive her, consequently وبالتاليLeila was set free أطلق سراحها.Lander deceived Amalia’s father in a false business project so Amalia wanted to revenge on him تنتقم منه.She was determined to catch Lander and hand him over to the police .She had an accident in the mountains and was seriously injuredاصيبت. Amalia told Leila everything about Lander .She was trustworthy جديرة بثقتهand Dr Hafez chose her to be in charge of the new excavation in the new site .
Martin Lander
He was a man in his mid-thirties with fair hair and a sun tanned faceوجه اسمر من تأثير أشعة الشمس.At first he was a mining engineer but he gave it up and got involved with people who took Inca treasures out of Peru and sold them to rich collectors. He was born in South Africa but he had an American passport. He was interested in archaeology .He broke into the tomb to steal the artifactsتحف فنية. When Leila found him in the cave, he was surprised and trapped herحبسه inside the tomb by pulling up the ladder. He had many contacts in Peru and helped Amalia get her first job in archaeology. He was a swindler نصابand deceived Amalia’s father in a false business project. He bribedأعطى رشوة Pablo Alvarez and offered him a lot of money for the gold mask .He was about to escape with the gold mask and other artifacts by a small plane but Leila crashed his plane with the truck.The police caught him and of course he got the punishment he deserved.العقاب الذي يستحقه
Pablo Alvarez
He worked with the Peruvian ministry of culture .He was on the committee which advised the UNISCO representativeممثل أو مندوب .He made notes of everything they found as it belonged to the Peruvian people .He told Leila much about the Inca Empire and civilization He took the gold mask to keep it in the safe .He was not up to responsibility المسؤليةas he helped Lander to steal the mask of gold when he offered him a lot of money. Pablo told Dr Hafez how hard his life was because he had a sick child and needed money. At last he participated in a trap to arrest Lander.
Ramon
He was one of the men working on the site .He found a gold figure تمثالof a child .He said that the Incas sacrificedيضحي ب children to please their gods. Being small he got through the hole in the wall and found some bits of pottery خزفand some human bones. Ramon took part in catching Lander. He drove the car in which Leila and Dr Hafez were following Lander’s truck to the airport.
The Incas
The Incas were the Peruvian ancient people .Although they ruled a huge empire ,they never had any writing .They conquered the Chimu who were famous for their gold and silver .When the Incas conquered the Chimu ,they sent the sons of Chimu Kings to the capital to make sure their fathers were loyal. The Incas sacrificed children to please their gods .
The Incas and the ancient Egyptians .
The Similaritiesاوجه التشابه
Both the Incas and the ancient Egyptians mummified كانوا يقومون بتحنيطtheir kings and queens. They put gold masks on their faces, they also put gold figures of animals in their tombs as well as food and drink beside them.
The differences.
Unlike the Egyptians ,the Incas held important festivalsاحتفالات أو مهرجانات for the mummies of their kings and queens every year ,they put their mummified kings on litters نقالاتand dressed them in fine clothes and took them through the streets. The Incas killed women and servants and buried them with the kings to look after them in the next world.
The Laser- dating machine
It is used to date old things such as cloth and wood .It is the latest technology .Dr Hafez and his team were the first users of it, so it was a secret.
