Man has probably over-exploited the Middle East and the Mediterranean lands of North Africa more than other regions on earth. His exploitation has gone on for longer, and has probably had more far-reaching effects there. Even in Roman times two thousand years ago, the extensive forests and abundant wildlife of the Middle East and North Africa were disappearing to meet the demands of an expanding human civilization. The desertification of much of the marginal lands of the Arab World owes more to human over-exploitation of a fragile environment than to climatic or other natural changes.
